For Immediate Release

Figura Avulsa is thrilled to present #13, a two-person presentation by Ellie Ga and João Simões.
This marks the 13th project in Figura Avulsa’s programming.
The artists, struck by fortunate chance encounters that they often plot or summon, are thus present to record, process, collect.

Ellie Ga presents a video, sound and a written text — a three-pronged dispatch from her ongoing fascination with the cagarros’ lifecycle and the marine biologists who save them. Cagarro chicks are born blind; hundreds crash into artificial lights on the way to a life at sea; and survivors return to land only briefly once a year. The bird is also famous for its eerie vocalizations, a recognizable sound for many inhabitants. But they are rarely seen.

João Simões contributes one of his short poems dated from 2011, and most probably a new one — as a free Xerox edition.

Ellie Ga (b.1976, New York City) is an artist and writer based in Lisbon.
João Simões (b. 1971, Luanda). Artist, architect and publisher based in Lisbon.
