Christine Rebet: The Fall
Exhibition
Aug 31 — Sep 15, 2025
Figura Avulsa
Figura Avulsa is thrilled to present THE FALL, a film screening and display of two drawing triptychs by Christine Rebet, opening August 31st, 6—8PM. The exhibition will be on view by appointment until September 15th, 2025. This is Rebet’s second presentation with Figura Avulsa.
In the early 18th century, fugitive enslaved Africans in Jamaica formed free Maroon communities in the Blue mountains. Their legendary leader, Queen Nanny, led the fight for freedom using guerrilla and camouflage tactics. She became a celebrated symbol of resistance against slavery and colonialism. Her spirit endures today, with the Windward Maroons of Moore Town honoring her annually through dance ceremonies — a legacy continued by her descendant, Simone Harris, who also narrates this heritage for the The Fall.
Christine Rebet is an artist based in Paris, whose practice combines drawing, film, sculpture, installation and performance. In her brand of social critique, Rebet addresses the traumas of personal and collective histories, commenting on spectacle, spectatorship, and the intersection of public and private spheres.
With a background in space design and choreography, she stages hand-drawn animations in immersive environments and sculptural props, using techniques of early animation to present an antiheroic and anarchistic social critique.
Rebet holds a BA from Central Saint Martins, London, and an MFA from Columbia University, New York.
Her work has been exhibited and screened internationally at numerous film festivals, galleries and institutions such as the Museum of Contemporary Art in Lyon, Le Jeu de Paume (Paris), the Cartier Foundation (Paris), the Santa Fe Biennial (USA), the Lofoten Biennial (Norway), Bureau (New York), Album Arte (Rome), Le Magasin (Grenoble), the Shanghai Art Museum (China), Parasol Unit (London), MAC VAL (Vitry-sur-Seine), the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art, The Sculpture Center (Long Island City), Moore Space (Miami), among others.
