Charles Mayton: Packed

Exhibition

June 2021

Figura Avulsa

CHARLES MAYTON: PACKED
Opening June 20, 4—7pm

Figura Avulsa is pleased to present Charles Mayton: Packed, the artist’s first exhibition in Lisbon.

The idea for this show came about several years ago when a friend suggested a sardine can painting show that would take place in Portugal. The proposal was inspired by several works I had made in the past which included sardine cans. These works, part of a larger preoccupation at the time, dealt with the notion of visual consumption via formal puns involving foodstuffs that occurred historically in still life painting.

These new miniature scaled works rely less on linguistic play and the relation to the contents which were consumed in order to make them and were developed instead with the idea of figuration and a shared space of occupancy.
In other words, the content(s) have been consumed and what is left is a space for others.
I would like to thank Conserveira de Lisboa for supplying some delicious canned fish and likewise supports for the works. Also thank you to Ana Cardoso and Figura Avulsa for assisting in finally realizing this project and for graciously hosting this work.
